GUERRILLA GIRLS

While researching today I found a girl gang called the Guerrilla Girls who are an anonymous group of feminist, female artists devoted to fighting sexism and racism with in the art world. They wear gorilla masks to remain anonymous because they believe their identity is not what matters as one of them explains in an interview mainly, we wanted the focus to be on the issues, not our personality’s or our own work.’  I think gorillas as a creature are quite violent and the masks replicate this as they seem to be screaming. This gang of girls however protest in a no violent way instead telling the world how it is through their art work.

I liked this idea of how a girl gang could be non-violent and even though the word gang has all those bad connotations it can still mean something good and empowering. The work these girls did not only helped me develop my ideas but it also made me want to be apart of their movement with them as they stand for the people in society who are not represented enough. The imagery I found on them made me think of silhouettes such as big oversized fur coats and ski masks, taken form the Guerrilla masks fur and also the fact they want to stay anonymous. If you want to find out more about their work and what they do here is the link to their website  http://www.guerrillagirls.com
